WATCH: Veteran Democratic Senator Announces Surprise Retirement, Hurting Schumer’s Plans

In a move that could shake up the political landscape heading into the 2026 midterms, longtime Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire has announced she won’t seek re-election—delivering a potential blow to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s hopes of building a strong Democratic front against Donald Trump.

Shaheen, who has served two terms in the Senate, shared her decision in a heartfelt video posted online on March 12. “I got into public service to make a difference for the people of New Hampshire, and that mission hasn’t changed,” she said. “But after careful thought, I’ve decided not to run for a third term in 2026. It’s simply time.”

Her departure adds pressure on Democrats, especially with New Hampshire becoming more politically competitive in recent years. The state came close to flipping red in 2024, and with Trump’s continued popularity, Republicans could have a real shot at turning the seat.

The news also comes as freshman Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia prepares to defend his seat in a state that leans red. His win in 2020 was already seen as a surprise, and now, with growing criticism—even from within his own party—his path to re-election looks tough.

While Senator Shaheen made it clear she’s stepping away from the Senate, she also emphasized that she’s not stepping away from public life. “I may be leaving the Senate, but I’m not retiring. I’ll keep fighting for the values that matter to New Hampshire and the nation.”

Republicans are already gearing up for a possible flip. Scott Brown, a former U.S. senator and ambassador, has reportedly shown interest in the seat. And former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu is also rumored to be considering a run, according to NBC News.

One thing’s certain: with Shaheen stepping down, the 2026 race for her seat is likely to be one of the most closely watched in the country.
