In a recent episode of The Vinyl Guide Podcast, drummer Charlie Benante shared insights about his involvement in PANTERA’s highly anticipated return to the stage.
The revived PANTERA lineup, featuring Phil Anselmo on vocals, Rex Brown on bass, Zakk Wylde on guitar, and Charlie Benante on drums, is gearing up to headline major festivals across North America, South America, and Europe. They will also headline their own concerts and join METALLICA for a monumental stadium tour in 2024. This reunion is a monumental moment for PANTERA enthusiasts, marking the first time in over two decades that the surviving members of the band have united for live performances.
Billboard reported that the lineup received approval from the estates of PANTERA’s founding members, drummer Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, along with Rex Brown, who previously expressed reservations about Zakk Wylde joining the band for tours. The reasons behind this change of heart remain unclear.
Charlie Benante expressed his sentiments regarding the PANTERA reunion, highlighting it as an opportunity to pay homage to his friends, showcase beloved songs to a new audience, and stay true to the band’s legacy. While acknowledging that this version of PANTERA is different from the original lineup, Benante emphasized their commitment to preserving the band’s essence and delivering an authentic experience to fans.
Reflecting on conversations with Vinnie Paul about a potential PANTERA reunion during his lifetime, Benante revealed that such discussions were never a focal point, focusing instead on different aspects when they were together. However, he did mention hearing that Vinnie was open to the idea at one point.
Regarding the possibility of releasing a live recording from their upcoming tour, Benante expressed enthusiasm, stating that they have discussed the idea and are considering compiling live tracks for a future release.
During a previous interview on “The Metallica Report,” Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown shared their excitement about PANTERA’s return to the stage. Anselmo highlighted the empowering and joyful experience of performing live again, while Brown praised Charlie Benante’s ability to honor Vinnie Paul’s drumming style with remarkable precision.
Anselmo and Brown also expressed admiration for Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante, noting their enthusiasm and unique contributions to the PANTERA team. They emphasized the importance of continuing the PANTERA legacy in a way that honors Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell’s vision, believing that the founding members would approve of this new chapter in the band’s journey.
