Noel Gallagher’s Songwriting Journey: From Oasis to High Flying Birds
Everybody makes mistakes, even seasoned musicians like Noel Gallagher. Over his three-decade-long career, the ex-Oasis songwriter has penned timeless tracks that resonate with audiences globally. While Oasis’s discography showed diminishing returns over time, Gallagher reaffirmed his songwriting prowess with his solo project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Despite his success, Gallagher’s career has not been without its mistakes and missteps.
Transition from Oasis to High Flying Birds
The long-awaited break-up of Oasis in 2009 marked a new beginning for Gallagher with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Oasis, renowned for their Britpop anthems, was primarily known for brash, masculine guitar music delivered with Liam Gallagher’s characteristic arrogance. However, Noel’s songwriting hinted at a more intimate side, evident in overlooked Oasis tracks like ‘Talk Tonight’ and ‘Half the World Away’. These tracks showcased his ability to craft personal, acoustic songs, a talent he fully explored in his solo work.
Exploring New Musical Themes
With the High Flying Birds, Gallagher’s songwriting became more eclectic and collaborative. This evolution is symbolized by the 2021 compilation album Back the Way We Came: Vol. 1, which includes tracks from the High Flying Birds’ first three records and previously unheard songs. Notable among these is ‘We’re on Our Way Now,’ a track worked on for years before finally being recorded.
Overcoming Creative Challenges
Reflecting on ‘We’re on Our Way Now,’ Gallagher revealed, “I’ve had that song for quite a while but never really said ‘Yes, it is finished.’” The song’s unfinished quality adds to its compelling nature. Gallagher admitted, “It’s great, but it’s so flawed.” This sentiment could apply to many of his songs throughout his illustrious career. The track features a guide vocal that, due to a studio mishap, could never be replicated. Gallagher explained, “I sang the words that are on there now, and I’ve effectively had to leave them because I went back to do it and it didn’t sound as good.”
Despite its flaws, ‘We’re on Our Way Now’ still earns Gallagher’s approval. He stated, “I think it’s a great song, and I know people are gonna love it if they loved ‘If I Had A Gun’ and ‘The Dying of the Light’. It’s kind of one of those songs.” This unfinished track found its place on Back the Way We Came: Vol. 1, highlighting Gallagher’s ability to turn mistakes into musical gems.
