U.S. Offers New Voluntary Exit Program for Undocumented Immigrants

In a new approach to immigration enforcement, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a voluntary self-departure program designed to offer undocumented immigrants a more humane and cost-effective way to return to their home countries.

Starting May 14, 2025, eligible individuals can sign up to receive a free commercial flight and a $1,000 stipend if they choose to leave the U.S. voluntarily. The incentive is granted once officials confirm the participant has left the country. To register, migrants must use the official CBP One mobile app.

Government officials are calling the program a practical solution that balances compassion with savings. Compared to traditional enforcement and deportation methods, voluntary departures could cut costs by up to 70%. That’s thanks to fewer court cases, lower detention expenses, and a smoother return process.

One big plus: those who choose this route may still be eligible to apply for legal reentry later on — a key difference from formal deportations, which often carry long-term bans. DHS hopes this flexibility will encourage more people to take part and help bring more order to the immigration system overall.

Supporters say the program not only eases pressure on immigration courts and detention centers, but also offers a respectful exit option that puts dignity first while saving taxpayer money.
