Trump’s Popularity Climbs Despite Tariff Controversy, Poll Shows

Former President Donald Trump is seeing a boost in popularity—even as his new tariffs shake up global markets.

A new poll from DailyMail.com and J.L. Partners, which surveyed over 1,000 registered voters between March 31 and April 3, shows Trump’s approval rating has jumped to 53%, up from 49% the week before. That’s a surprising rise, considering the backlash he’s faced after announcing sweeping tariffs just days earlier.

What’s even more eye-catching is where some of that support is coming from. Among voters aged 18 to 29, Trump’s approval surged by 13 points. He also gained 6 points among Democrats and independents—groups not typically known for backing him. Perhaps most notably, his support among Black voters soared by 17 points in just one week.

When it comes to his proposed 10% universal tariff on imported goods, Americans appear more supportive than not. 36% said they back the idea, while 28% oppose it and the remaining 36% said they’re unsure. The numbers were similar when voters were asked about raising tariffs on all foreign products, with a slight majority in favor.

Support for targeted tariffs—especially those aimed at China and the European Union—has also grown since last month. Voters showed strong approval for tariffs on sectors like aircraft, plastics, metals, iron, and steel.

As for what’s next? It’s not all hardline policy.

Trump took to Truth Social on Friday to announce ongoing talks with Vietnam to eliminate tariffs entirely. “I had a great conversation with Vietnam’s General Secretary To Lam,” Trump shared. “They want zero tariffs, and so do we—if a fair deal can be reached.”

Meanwhile, over in Florida, Argentine President Javier Milei revealed that his administration is working with Trump’s team on a similar plan: a zero-tariff agreement on around 50 export goods, with a broader free trade agreement potentially on the horizon.

Milei highlighted that five of eight initial trade issues have already been addressed, and the talks aim to strengthen Argentina’s export power—particularly products that make up 80% of its exports to the U.S. He emphasized his country’s goal of becoming “the most liberated economy in the world,” touting recent economic growth and a significant drop in poverty since December 2023.

Despite the noise and criticism, Trump’s tariff strategy seems to be connecting with voters—and may be setting the stage for bold international trade moves in the months ahead.
