Robert De Niro Responds to His Child Coming Out as Transgender

Robert De Niro’s daughter, Airyn, has shared her story publicly for the first time since coming out as transgender at age 29. Born in 1995 during De Niro’s relationship with actress Toukie Smith, Airyn grew up mostly out of the spotlight. Now, she’s stepping forward to live openly and hopes her journey will inspire others—especially other Black, queer, and plus-sized women navigating similar paths.

Airyn revealed that she began hormone therapy in November 2024, describing the decision as one that finally felt right. She also opened up about struggling with beauty standards growing up, but said she’s now focused on embracing her true self and working toward a degree in mental health counseling. “I want to succeed on my own terms,” she said.

Her father, now 81, offered a heartfelt message of support. “I love and support Airyn as my daughter,” De Niro told People. “I don’t see what the big deal is. I love all my children and respect who they are.”

Airyn’s story comes at a time when transgender rights are facing increased political challenges in the U.S., making her decision to share her truth especially powerful and timely. Through her honesty and courage, she hopes to create space for others to do the same—with pride, not fear.
