“Outrage Erupts After Trump Removes Librarian of Congress Backed by Democrats”

In what turned into a political firestorm, President Trump recently removed Carla Hayden from her position as Librarian of Congress—prompting a dramatic wave of backlash from top Democrats.

Hayden, appointed by former President Obama and confirmed in 2016, was set to serve until 2026. Though she mostly kept a low profile, she drew headlines a few years ago for allowing pop star Lizzo to play James Madison’s historic crystal flute—an unusual moment that sparked debate across social media.

But on Thursday, May 8, her time in office abruptly ended. The Trump administration sent a short email announcing her termination:
“Carla. On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to notify you that your role as the Librarian of Congress is hereby terminated, effective immediately. We appreciate your service.”

The decision didn’t come out of the blue for some conservative groups. The American Accountability Foundation had openly called for Hayden’s removal, claiming she promoted progressive values, was anti-Trump, and supported controversial policies. After the announcement, the group celebrated her departure on social media, thanking Trump and calling Hayden a “woke and radical” figure.

Predictably, the response from Democratic leaders was swift and intense.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the move, suggesting it was rooted in political bias and disrespect.
“Dr. Carla Hayden is a trailblazer and a highly regarded public servant. Trump’s decision to fire her in such a cold, impersonal way is disgraceful,” Jeffries said. He also accused Trump of attempting to “censor literature and erase history.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed that outrage, claiming the move was part of a larger assault on democratic institutions.
“Dr. Hayden brought integrity and vision to the Library of Congress. This reckless firing is just another example of Trump treating public offices like reality TV show prizes,” he said.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) also weighed in, passionately defending Hayden’s legacy:
“She’s a guardian of truth and culture. Removing her is not just political—it’s an insult to every American who values knowledge and history.”

As for Trump, he has yet to elaborate on the decision. But for now, the shake-up at the Library of Congress has become the latest flashpoint in the deepening partisan divide over public institutions, leadership, and the future of American culture.
