New Smashing Pumpkins Guitarist Proposes Major Change For The Band

Smashing Pumpkins’ new guitarist Kiki Wong is eager to bring back the band’s heavier sound.

Wong shared her thoughts on her guitar-playing skills:

“Honestly, I may not be the absolute best player out there—in fact, I know I’m not! I’m continuously learning and trying to improve every day. But what I have is an undying love for guitar and heavy metal.”

She elaborated on her passion for the instrument and the genre:

“I probably have an unhealthy obsession with guitar and heavy metal, and a slightly self-deprecating sense of humor. But I hope it can bring a little bit of that heavy side of the Pumpkins out more since I know that’s what their music is rooted in.”

Smashing Pumpkins Introduced Wong as Their New Member Last Month

Last October, original Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder left the band. The search for a new guitarist began, with the band sharing updates with fans. They announced last month on Instagram that they had found their new guitarist: Kiki Wong.

“First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months. I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered—and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus.”

In the same post, Kiki expressed her excitement about joining the group:

“It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock’s greatest and most influential musicians of all time. I never thought little ol’ 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment. It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pay off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to share the stage with the legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”

Kiki Wong and her new bandmates will perform live together for the first time on June 7 at Birmingham Utilita Arena during their tour with Weezer. Following their European dates, they will continue with shows in the United States.
