Neil Young has thrilled fans by announcing the release of his ‘lost’ album, Oceanside Countryside, which will debut on February 14 as part of his Analogue Originals Series (AOS). This long-shelved record, originally recorded in 1977, adds another gem to the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter’s archive of rediscovered works.
The Story Behind Oceanside Countryside
While the reasons for the album’s initial shelving remain unclear, Young has confirmed that Oceanside Countryside will include the original mixes as they were created during its recording. The album’s two sides are distinctly themed:
- Oceanside: Solo tracks recorded in the coastal settings of Malibu and Florida.
- Countryside: Collaborative recordings made in Nashville with various contributors.
Tracks like ‘Lost in Space’ and ‘Captain Kennedy’—previously featured on Hawks and Doves (1980)—are included, as well as alternate mixes of songs like ‘Field of Opportunity’ and ‘Dance Dance Dance,’ which appeared on Archives Vol. III in 2023.
“These songs are the original mixes done at the time of the recordings,” Young stated, emphasizing the album’s authenticity.
Neil Young’s Passion for Lost Albums
Young has become known for releasing shelved albums from his extensive archive. Since 2017, he has unearthed recordings as far back as 1969, including Hitchhiker and Homegrown. His releases span solo projects and collaborations with Crazy Horse, further cementing his legacy as a prolific artist.
Vinyl-Only Release
In a move that aligns with the album’s vintage nature, Oceanside Countryside will be available exclusively on vinyl. Young has opted against releasing it in other physical formats, adding to its nostalgic appeal.
Fans can now stream the latest single, ‘Field of Opportunity,’ on Spotify. After previously removing his catalog, Neil Young recently returned to the platform, reaching an agreement in 2024 to bring his music back to the streaming service.
Neil Young’s Oceanside Countryside is a must-have for collectors and fans eager to explore another chapter of his storied career.
