MIKE PORTNOY Learns TOOL’s “Pneuma” As Fast As Possible, Challenges DANNY CAREY

Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy is taking on an impressive challenge in his series on Drumeo – learning Tool’s “Pneuma” as quickly as possible. Portnoy impressively nails the track despite the time crunch, and his attempt is filled with plenty of self-deprecating humor as he tries to master Danny Carey’s complex drumming.

“I knew this song from hearing it as a fan, just as a casual listener,” Portnoy shared. “I was blown away by it, but I never thought I would ever try to learn it. There’s no way on Earth I could have learned all of Danny’s fills. I’m sure Danny spent days, weeks, months, years crafting this masterpiece – and it is a masterpiece, truly – but even with my knowledge of odd time signatures, this was an enormous challenge. I’m a feel player, and this tested me to the limit. I don’t know whether to thank you or be mad at you.”

Portnoy then playfully challenged Carey: “Danny, you have to come and try [Dream Theater’s] ‘The Dance Of Eternity’ now.”
