Laura Marling Returns with New Single ‘Patterns’ Ahead of Upcoming Album ‘Patterns In Repeat’

Four-time Mercury Prize-nominee Laura Marling has made a highly anticipated return with her new single, ‘Patterns.’ This track serves as the first glimpse of her forthcoming album, Patterns In Repeat, set for release on October 25th via Chrysalis/Partisan Records. This marks Marling’s first full-length solo studio effort since her acclaimed 2020 album, Song for Our Daughter.

Laura Marling’s Journey and Influence of Motherhood

Despite not releasing new solo material for a few years, Marling has remained incredibly busy. In 2021, her side project with Mike Lindsay, LUMP, released their second album, Animal. More significantly, Marling became a mother for the first time in 2023, a life-changing event that heavily influenced the themes and narratives of Patterns In Repeat.

In a heartfelt statement, Marling shared how she expected motherhood to pause her career temporarily. However, she was pleasantly surprised to find that she could balance songwriting with her new parental responsibilities. “Over the course of nine months, I had happily prepared myself for the fact that my life as a songwriter would be put on hold while I adjusted to life as a new parent. How delighted then was I to discover that for the first few months of a baby’s life, you can bounce them in a bouncer and play guitar all day,” she revealed.

Thematic Elements of ‘Patterns In Repeat’

Patterns In Repeat delves deeply into the personal and universal aspects of family life. Marling reflects on her own childhood and the complexities of the domestic sphere. She describes the album as an exploration of “the frail threads that bind a family together, the good intentions we hold onto for our progeny, and the many and various ways they get lost in time.”

Marling also notes that every record in her career has served as a time-stamped chapter of her life, with Patterns In Repeat representing a new and enormous perspective. She eloquently captures the profound experience of parenthood, saying, “New parents feel like they discovered that feeling – one of the very finest that life has to offer, of looking into the eyes of your child and feeling the enormity of the picture as a whole, the enormity of a precarious life, celestial, fragile and extraordinary, taking its place among the comparatively banal constellation of a family.”

Upcoming Performances

While an extensive tour for Patterns In Repeat hasn’t been announced, Laura Marling is set to showcase her new album with special residencies. Fans can look forward to seeing her perform at London’s Hackney Church and the Bowery Ballroom in New York.
