Dream Theater’s frontman James LaBrie recently opened up about the band’s highly anticipated 40th Anniversary Tour 2024 – 2025 in a conversation with Brazilian music journalist Igor Miranda. This tour marks a significant moment for the band, especially since drummer Mike Portnoy rejoined last October.
LaBrie shared insights into the tour’s setlist, highlighting Portnoy’s pivotal role in its creation. “We gave Mike Portnoy full control over the setlist again, and he’s done an amazing job,” LaBrie remarked. “He asked each of us for input, ensuring the lineup resonates with our fans. It’s a powerful mix that captures many defining moments in our career.”
While LaBrie didn’t reveal specific songs, he assured fans of an unforgettable experience. “I can’t spoil the setlist, but I promise it’s spectacular. It’s a high-energy lineup that celebrates our journey together,” he added enthusiastically.
Discussing the band’s reunion with Portnoy, LaBrie acknowledged the gradual process that led to their collaboration. “Our paths crossed again a few years back during a show in New York. It was the first time we’d seen each other in over a decade,” LaBrie recalled. “From there, things slowly evolved, and eventually, we felt it was the right time to reconnect.”
Reflecting on the band’s current phase, LaBrie praised former drummer Mike Mangini’s contributions while expressing excitement for the upcoming tour with Portnoy. “Mike Mangini is an incredible musician, and we’re proud of the albums we made together,” LaBrie emphasized. “But now, reuniting with our original drummer for our 40th anniversary tour—it’s monumental.”
LaBrie also provided updates on Dream Theater’s forthcoming sixteenth studio album, the band’s first with Portnoy in 15 years. “Right now, we’re recording keyboards and vocals,” he revealed. “The album is taking shape beautifully, and we’re thrilled with the progress.”
Regarding the album’s musical direction, LaBrie hinted at its satisfaction without giving away too much. “We’re keeping details under wraps for now,” he said, “but we’re ecstatic about how it’s turning out. It’s exactly the album we set out to create.”
