Gass’s remark sparked controversy in Australia and the US. Although many concert attendees chuckled, several Australian politicians demanded the Prime Minister deport the musicians. Senator Ralph Babet called for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to denounce Tenacious D and urged Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to revoke their visas and deport them.
In response, Tenacious D canceled their remaining tour dates and left Australia. Jack Black, who initially laughed at the joke, later issued a solemn statement on social media, saying, “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Almost a month later, Black provided an update on Tenacious D’s future. Speaking to Variety at the Borderlands premiere on August 6th, he said, “We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.” In his initial statement, Black distanced himself from Gass’s remarks, stating he was “blindsided by the statement that was said at the show.” When asked if he remained on good terms with Gass, Black confirmed, “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes… And we’ll be back when it feels right.”
