In a stunning development, one of New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s top aides has been indicted on federal charges that have sent shockwaves through the state’s political scene.
Linda Sun, who served as Deputy Chief of Staff in the New York State Executive Chamber, is accused of secretly working on behalf of the Chinese government while holding a high-ranking public position. According to Representative Nick Langworthy, a Republican from New York, the charges are connected to treason-related activities and involve millions of dollars allegedly funneled from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Sun, a longtime figure in state politics with experience under both Governor Hochul and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, now faces accusations that she acted as an undercover agent. U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated that while Sun appeared to be serving the people of New York, she and her husband were allegedly advancing the interests of the Chinese government.
“This wasn’t just a betrayal of public trust,” Peace explained. “It was a calculated scheme that personally enriched the defendants by millions of dollars.”
FBI Acting Assistant Director Curtis added that Sun exploited her influential government role to discreetly push the agenda of the Chinese Communist Party, while her husband, Christopher Hu, helped move the money behind the scenes.
“This case is a serious threat to national security,” Curtis emphasized.
The allegations add to mounting scrutiny surrounding Governor Hochul’s administration, which has already drawn criticism for policies like congestion pricing and her stance on immigration. While the governor herself is not accused of any wrongdoing, the arrest has intensified partisan tensions in New York.
Langworthy didn’t hold back during a recent hearing, saying, “This should concern every New Yorker, no matter your political beliefs. When you’re dealing with a $220 billion state budget and the financial hub of the world, foreign interference at this level is alarming.”
Sun’s arrest is not only a major scandal for New York politics — it also raises broader questions about foreign influence in U.S. government positions. The case is still unfolding, but it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public service.
