A new poll suggests that voter sentiment in New York’s upcoming Senate primary may be shifting in a big way. A younger, fresh-faced candidate is gaining serious ground — even pulling ahead of a long-time incumbent senator in a hypothetical matchup.
The survey, conducted in late March with 767 likely primary voters, found the challenger leading by 19 percentage points. Voters were asked to consider each candidate’s background, political experience, and overall likability before choosing their preference.
What’s especially striking is the challenger’s strong appeal among younger voters. Among those under 45, the lead balloons to a whopping 50-point advantage. The current senator only held a slight edge with voters who identified as moderates.
The poll also revealed a broader frustration with party leadership. A clear majority of respondents said they feel their current representatives aren’t doing enough to push back against the opposing party’s influence on national issues.
