Deftones have completed recording their new album musically, with vocalist Chino Moreno now focusing on perfecting the vocals. Moreno shared in an interview at Coachella that they’ve been working on the record for about a year and a half, and he’s dedicated to getting the vocals just right.
“We haven’t said much about it publicly,” Moreno mentioned. “We’ve been in and out of the studio, working on and off, until we’ve got a complete musical record. Now, it’s my job to wrap up the vocals.”
After his upcoming show and a quick trip home to Oregon, Moreno will dive back into the studio. He emphasized that they’re not rushing the process; they want the album to be exceptional. Moreno hinted at the new sound being invigorated and expressed excitement about the creative process within the band.
“It’s been a while since we were last in the studio, pre-COVID,” Moreno reflected. “Being creative is the most fun part. Creating something from nothing with your friends, bouncing ideas off each other—it’s a feeling like no other.”
The new album also marks a change without bassist Sergio Vega, who left in 2021. Fred Sablan has been filling in live, though there hasn’t been an official announcement about a permanent replacement for Vega yet.
