The 1974 Live Recordings: A Historic Collection
The 1974 Live Recordings captures Dylan’s return to touring in 1974, alongside The Band, on an extensive arena tour. The collection spans 27 discs and includes 417 previously unreleased tracks. Among these is a new version of ‘Forever Young,’ recorded in Seattle on February 9th, 1974, which was released on July 9th.
Special Release by Third Man Records
In addition to the boxset, Jack White’s Third Man Records will release The 1974 Live Recordings: The Missing Songs From Before The Flood. This triple-LP collection includes tracks that were left off the original Before The Flood live album due to the constraints of the time.
A Trailblazing Tour
Dylan’s 1974 tour with The Band was a pivotal moment in music history. It set a precedent for artists performing in large indoor arenas, paving the way for future tours. The 40-date North American tour followed the release of Planet Waves and marked Dylan’s return to live performances after a seven-year hiatus.
The tour included notable performances, such as three concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden and three shows at The Forum in Inglewood. According to a 1974 article from The New York Times, the tour grossed over $5 million in ticket sales, equivalent to over $33 million today.
Dylan’s Enduring Legacy
This tour reignited Dylan’s passion for live performances, leading to a 50-year streak of consistent touring. Despite being in his 80s, Dylan continues to perform, recently joining forces with Willie Nelson for a major co-headline tour across America.
The 1974 Live Recordings boxset is a testament to Dylan’s enduring influence and a must-have for fans and music historians alike.
