Even if you’re a rock icon who loves country rock, alternative rock, blues rock, or many other subgenres, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a fan of a pop star. Music knows no boundaries, and of course, no one should be judged for the music they listen to. While this is the case, the rock and metal music community often frowns on people who listen to rock, hip-hop, pop, and rap at the same time.
Mick Jagger is a perfect example of a rock icon who listens to all kinds of music. The Stones legend has collaborated with many artists outside of the rock community, and it’s rumored that he’s getting ready to work on a music project with Dua Lipa. Steve Vai, on the other hand, stated that he had been listening to the ‘As It Was’ singer Harry Styles thanks to his wife. As it seems, Phil Collins is another name who is pretty fond of a pop diva: Madonna.
1985 was an important year in terms of music, such as the reunited Led Zeppelin’s Live Aid show, David Bowie and Mick Jagger’s iconic collab ‘Dancing in the Street,’ and the 14-week chart success of Dire Straits album ‘Brothers In Arms.’ That year, Phil Collins and Madonna were also enjoying great success, with many hits topping the charts. Although they were rivals on the music charts, it turns out Collins was a Madonna fan.
Speaking to David Sheff for an interview, Phil Collins revealed that his soft spot was Madonna. The musician then humorously added that this might be because of her innocent voice or choice of underwear. Following that, he recalled an instance when he met Sean Penn and Madonna while he was out with his kids. Collins revealed that his son Simon had insisted on getting an autograph from Madonna, and the pop diva was pretty nervous and embarrassed while giving Collins an autograph.
“I’ve got a soft spot for Madonna,” Collins said. “She has a lot of intensity. Maybe it’s that little innocent voice and the underwear she wears.” He recalled meeting the pop icon, saying, “Funnily enough, I met them — Sean Penn and Madonna. I went to see John Cougar in Los Angeles while I had my kids out with me. They are fans of his, so I took them backstage after the gig, and there in the corner was this couple. My son Simon said, ‘Dad, that’s Madonna!’ I said, ‘Naaaa.’ He said, ‘Da-a-ad, it is, it is, it is. Get her autograph for me! Please.’”
The rocker continued, “I collect autographs for them — I got Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson. I finally went over to Sean and said, ‘Hello, I’m Phil Collins.’ He said, ‘I know who you are, man.’ I thought he was going to hit me. I said, ‘Is it possible, Madonna, that you could give my kids autographs? They won’t speak to me if I don’t ask.’ So she, quite nervously, embarrassed, gave me her autograph. She didn’t seem to be able to deal with it very well.”
So, Phil Collins described Madonna as an artist for whom he has a soft spot. As it seems, his son Simon was also a fan of the timeless pop star, and Collins had a chance to meet Madonna thanks to him. However, as the Genesis frontman recalled, Madonna didn’t seem comfortable dealing with autographs, contrary to what he had expected.
