The Lathums Announce Third Album Matter Does Not Define, Coming March 2025
The Lathums have officially announced their third studio album, Matter Does Not Define, which is set to release on March 7, 2025. Following the success of their two previous chart-topping albums, the Wigan-based band has returned to their roots to create a record that showcases a raw and authentic sound.
New Single “Stellar Cast” and Upcoming Album Highlights
The announcement follows the release of Matter Does Not Define’s latest single, “Stellar Cast,” which dropped on October 28th. This track, along with their summer release “No Direction,” highlights the album’s introspective themes. Both singles were released just ahead of the band’s largest headline show to date at Robin Park in Wigan, a celebration of their local roots and growing popularity.
Matter Does Not Define was recorded in the band’s hometown of Wigan before moving to Kempton Street Studios in Liverpool to finalize the project. Speaking about the album, frontman Alex Moore shared that its theme is captured in a powerful lyric from the third track, “Reflections of Lessons Left”: “When will they learn that it’s not matter that defines a being? It’s the reflections of the lessons they leave.” Moore explained that this lyric became the “catalyst” for the album’s message, setting a tone that resonates with today’s social and personal challenges.
Behind the Scenes: A Return to Roots for Matter Does Not Define
The Lathums worked alongside producers John Kettle and Chris Taylor, two longtime friends and mentors. Moore described the recording process as “coming full circle,” as Kettle had also been his college tutor. “Recording Matter Does Not Define felt organic, free from industry demands, and allowed us to be creative without limitations. It was like being back in college, making music without constraints,” he said. According to Moore, this approach helped the band create a record that feels “real” and “raw.”
Upcoming UK and Ireland Tour in Support of Matter Does Not Define
To support the release of Matter Does Not Define, The Lathums have announced a 12-date UK and Ireland tour starting in March 2025. Key venues include London’s Brixton Academy and Manchester’s O2 Apollo, marking significant milestones in the band’s career.
