Stranger Things’ While playing Vecna, Jamie Campbell Bower listened to a cover of Placebo’s “Running Up That Hill”

Black metal acts such as Sun 0))), Mayhem, and Darkthrone also aided in his character development. It is common practice for actors to put on headphones and listen to music while transitioning between roles. Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrays the antagonist Vecna in Season 4 of Stranger Things, chose to listen to “Running Up That Hill,” a song gaining newfound popularity due to the show. However, it was not the original version of the song by Kate Bush (which is surging on the Billboard charts even as we write). Bower instead disclosed in the Kyle Meredith With… podcast that Placebo’s 2006 cover of “Running Up That Hill” helped him remove Vecna’s skin.

“When I was preparing for Vecna, I would listen to bands such as Sun 0))), Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, and Mayhem,” the actor explained. “I was captivated by a large deal of black metal music and thought, ‘Wow, this is wonderful!'” Additionally, there’s something about the sensitivity in black metal production and their beliefs that I really, truly vibe with.” He proceeded, This was Vecna becoming Vecna. Escaping Vecna… I am a great Placebo fan. I love Placebo. Obviously, Placebo covered “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush somewhere in the late 1990s or early 2000s. So I would agree with that. Why not keep with the existing theme of the show? But the music is so lovely, we like Kate Bush, we are Kate Bush fans… Or, if I’m being particularly naughty, if someone wanted me to be naughty, and they said, “What would you choose?”, I would respond, “I dunno, Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” or anything equally obscene.”

Those who have watched Stranger Things Season 4 are aware that the use of metal to enter the twisted and wicked Vecna is logical, but the use of “Running Up That Hill” to escape is meta. (No reveals here!) Listen to Bower on Kyle Meredith With… below to hear what he has to say about finding Vecna’s voice in addition to his discussion on his new Dante-inspired solo music.
