She reflects, “When I was 5, my parents got divorced, and my dad moved from our home in England to Switzerland, where he stayed for more than 20 years.” This shift left her feeling an emotional distance from Phil. “He may have still been alive,” she wrote, “but most of the time, it felt as if he were completely gone.”
This absence deeply affected Lily, making her hyper-aware of her words and actions, as she feared her feelings might be misconstrued as anger or lack of love. During this period, Phil was immersed in his music career, particularly with Genesis, leaving little room for the support Lily needed. Interestingly, she didn’t even realize he was a rock star while growing up.
At the same time, Phil grappled with personal struggles, including an alcohol addiction, all while working on the Disney film Tarzan. He contributed five songs to the soundtrack, but the one that held special significance was “You’ll Be in My Heart,” written for Lily. Phil revealed that the song “began life as a melody I imagined singing to a baby Lily,” emphasizing its personal meaning.
When the song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2000, Phil expressed its deep emotional connection to their relationship. Lily recalled the shared experiences they had watching Disney movies together, noting, “It was his way of kind of being able to do it for his kids. It was so special.”
Having a rockstar for a father was a unique experience for Lily, who described it as surreal. “It’s a weird thing to have your dad on stage with a million people saying his name while you’re like, ‘No, that’s just dad,’” she shared. Over time, she became accustomed to the duality of his life, fondly recalling, “That person was Phil on stage, but at home, he was just dad.”
