Madonna has stated that she will never sell her previous catalog. “Ownership is all that matters, isn’t it?”

In a recent interview, Madonna reaffirmed her stance on the significance of her own music rights, stating that she has no plans to sell her vast catalog. In an interview with Variety, the pop icon confirmed her longtime manager Guy Osseri’s assertions that Madonna would never sell the rights to her extensive discography. When asked why she wouldn’t consider removing the rights, as the estates of Justin Timberlake, Sting, The Strokes’ Julian Casablanca, and David Bowie have in recent months, she responded bluntly, “Because I have songs. Possession is everything, correct? I suppose that is why [Oseary is] purchasing apes. This final line refers to the NFT company Bored Ape Yacht Club, which Oseri joined last year to represent.

Madonna signed a new publishing deal with Warner Music Group in August, even though she still retains ownership of her catalog. The singer announced the news by praising Warner as a “wonderful partner” and confirming that she would have a say in the re-release of her older material. Madonna announced last week that she will produce her own biopic to prevent “the wrong men” from taking control of the project, in keeping with her insistence on retaining ownership of her art. Madonna is directing and co-writing the film, which does not yet have a title or release date, with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, as announced in 2020. Julia Garner was reportedly offered the lead role in Ozark in June after “emerging as the favorite” among more than a dozen candidates.

Madonna’s fourteenth studio album, Madame X, was released in June 2019 and received four-star reviews from NME. She posted a photo of herself recording in a studio in December 2018, teasing that new music could be released in 2022. He promised a “surprise” in a social media post captioned “Great to make music in the studio again in the new year.” Madonna told Variety this week that she is “looking for interesting, fun ways to revisit my catalog and introduce my music to a new generation” in reference to her upcoming releases.
