In Fast X, Helen Mirren Sets Up the Return of Another Fast & Furious Character

Helen Mirren will reprise her role as Magdalene Shaw in Fast X, suggesting that Jason Statham will reprise his role as Deckard Shaw. The long-awaited return of Helen Mirren in Fast X suggests that Jason Statham may also return to the franchise. Fast X has a very large cast, but has also seen a number of cast and crew members leave the production. Dwayne Johnson famously left the main Fast & Furious franchise because of his feud with Vin Diesel, while director Justin Lin also left the production and was replaced by Louis Leterrier.  Helen Mirren joined the Fast Saga in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious as the mother of Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, Magdalene Shaw. Mirren subsequently reprised the role of Magdalene in Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and F9. In addition to Mirren returning for Fast X, there may be additional unconfirmed returning cast members.

Fast X does not list Jason Statham as a cast member, and the preceding F9 also concealed his presence until the end-credits scene. Shaw came face-to-face with Han (Sung Kang) for the first time since attempting to kill him, which clearly sets up the need for the two to bury the hatchet in the future of Fast Saga. As a result, Helen Mirren’s return as Magdalene in Fast X suggests that the film could be the setting where this occurs.  With F9’s end-credits sequence involving Shaw and Han serving as a surprise for both the former antagonist and the audience, it would be awkward and somewhat anticlimactic for Fast X to leave this scene unresolved. Without a definitive release date for Hobbs & Shaw 2, Shaw and Han’s resolution must either occur in the main Fast & Furious franchise or be postponed until the spin-off sequel is released. Simply omitting Shaw from Fast X would indicate a delay, but it would also leave audiences waiting for #JusticeForHan.

The Shaw family has become increasingly important to the Fast & Furious franchise, with Deckard’s brother Owen (Luke Evans) serving as the antagonist in Fast & Furious 6 before being retconned as anti-heroes in The Fate of the Furious, and their sister Haddie (Vanessa Kirby) appearing in Hobbs & Shaw. Mirren’s reappearance in Fast X demonstrates that the Shaw family tree is still very much a part of the series, further suggesting Deckard Shaw’s return in the film and making it more of a requirement with his and Han’s F9 encounter. Shaw is far more likely to appear in Fast X than is Luke Hobbs, played by The Rock, who will not be in the film. His situation with Han requires immediate attention, even if it is just a surprise reveal similar to his F9 end-credits scene. By bringing Magdalene Shaw back for Fast X, both the film and the extended Fast & Furious family are blatantly pleading for Deckard Shaw to return and make things right with Han.
