Drowning Pool will release their first new album since 2016’s Strike A Nerve; “Mind Right” is currently available for streaming. According to guitarist CJ Pierce, the new single was written immediately following Vinnie Paul’s death in 2018 and is a tribute to both Abbott brothers. And yes, I can see how the single is influenced by Pantera – it has that groove metal swagger that the band was known for, though the frantic breakdown and squealing guitar solo at two minutes exemplify the classic Drowning Pool nü-metal sound.
Pierce stated, “‘Mind Right’ began with the core Drowning Pool sound and then delved deeply into our southern metal roots.” “This song was written shortly after Vinnie Paul’s death as a tribute to him and Dime and to recognize the impact Pantera had on the Dallas music scene. It’s probably the heaviest song we’ve ever recorded, but it’s the ideal way to end ‘Strike A Nerve’; as the song’s title suggests, we all need to get our heads on straight. We must be aware of our surroundings, stand up for what we believe in, and never lose sight of the big picture. We cannot wait to perform this live!”
