David Lee Roth Admits His Work With Eddie Van Halen Ensured Their Longevity

You know what they say, ‘It takes one to know one!’ Yet, isn’t it true that even in a contentious relationship with someone, you still know deep down where the magic lies? In other words, you know that you couldn’t have gotten this far without each other’s presence and support. This is the story of Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth, where no word was ever said to complement each other, but apparently, DLR is finally ready to speak his true feelings about his late bandmate.

In a new episode of his The Roth Show podcast, the singer opened up to his audience like never before and shared his deepest feelings about Eddie. David said, “I’ve got to tell you: playing with Ed, writing songs with Ed, presenting those songs with Ed was better than any love affair I ever had.”

The rocker continued, “And some of those songs, I think, might last forever — or until the last syllable of time, as Shakespeare said. They became anthems. Where are they playing ‘Jump’ right now?”

Even in the midst of fighting and disputes and always going at it back and forth, Roth, in the back of his mind, was always aware that without Eddie in the band, their tunes wouldn’t have the same pixie dust that separated theirs from other tracks at the time and even now after many years.

What to take away from their relationship that played out in front of the world? Well, this underlying but nonspoken admiration for each other kept them going while they worked together and created songs that became cult classics for generations to come. It’s no small feat what the guys accomplished, and finally, after all these years, Diamond Dave seems to agree that together they were unstoppable.
