Memories with Lemmy and the Early Days of Blondie
Burke fondly recalls the early days of Blondie when Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead would hang out with the band. “Lemmy used to hang out with us in the early days of Blondie,” Burke reminisces. “We’d go down to Piccadilly nightclub Planets, where Lemmy and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy used to hang out. Lemmy was always on the fruit machine. Later, when he moved to LA, he did exactly the same thing at the Rainbow.”
Recording with Sky Saxon: The King of Garage Rock
Another highlight of Burke’s career was working with Sky Saxon, the enigmatic frontman of The Seeds, on an album titled King of Garage Rock. “Sky was living in a sort of commune, a ramshackle house in East Hollywood,” Burke recalls. “People were sleeping on the roof, there were drugs everywhere, and dogs running around. But he was a nice guy.”
Touring with Nancy Sinatra: A Royal Experience
One of the most fascinating chapters of Burke’s career was his time touring with Nancy Sinatra. “One of the best things about touring with Nancy was you could check into the hotel and say, ‘I’m with the Sinatra party,’ and it’s like saying you’re with the king. The Sinatra family are like American royalty,” Burke says. During these tours, Burke performed at venues ranging from intimate settings like Maxwell’s in Hoboken, where Nancy duetted with Jon Spencer, to grand arenas in Vienna celebrating Elvis Presley.
While staying at The Athenaeum on Green Park, Burke had another memorable encounter when Phil Spector, who had taken over the entire top floor, invited them to lunch. “You’d come across a lot of interesting people with Nancy,” Burke reflects, highlighting the extraordinary experiences that came with being part of the Sinatra entourage.
