During a recent interview with Ultimate Guitar, former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade revealed an intriguing fact about one of the band’s legendary tours. After their frontman, Brian Johnson, had to stop touring, the musician stated that AC/DC auditioned four different vocalists. On November 28, 2014, AC/DC released their sixteenth studio album, ‘Rock or Bust’ The album received positive reviews and increased the band members’ popularity and commercial success. It became known as their rhythm guitarist Stevie Young’s debut album following the departure of Malcolm Young due to health issues. The band then decided to tour in support of the album. The Rock or Bust World Tour began in Indio on April 10, 2015, and concluded in Philadelphia on September 20, 2016. As a result of the obstacles they faced prior to and during the concerts, however, a series of unfortunate events ensued. Malcolm Young’s retirement and Phil Rudd’s conviction caused numerous issues, with the most recent crisis occurring when vocalist Johnson developed hearing loss.
AC/DC needed a new vocalist for the remainder of the tour after doctors ordered him to stop touring for his recovery. As Rudd’s replacement, Slade disclosed some details about the situation. He recalled being initially unable to comprehend what was occurring and being surprised when Axl Rose joined them. The drummer disclosed that the band auditioned four other vocalists, without naming them, but ultimately chose the GN’R icon. Slade further stated that he admired Axl’s performance and that it was fantastic. Slade stated in an interview:
“Yes, four other singers auditioned, some of whom were known and some of whom were unknown. As was the case with the initial audition for the band in 1989, I am sworn to secrecy regarding the identities of those singers. But when that transpired, I was informed that we would have a sudden, unplanned day off, and I asked, “Why do we have tomorrow off?” What is happening?’ They claimed that Brian cannot perform. Tomorrow, Axl Rose will perform. We need to prepare today.’ ‘What? Axl Rose? You mean the band Guns N’ Roses? True. That Axl Rose. So this is how fast it was. I was informed that day, and Axl arrived the following day. He entered the room, we shook hands, and he told a joke, and I thought, ‘This guy’s alright.’ When he began singing, it was incredible. I was unable to believe it. He sang with all his heart, and it was incredible.” Below is a link to one of Rose’s performances.
