“To make an omelet, you must murder some people.” I am neither a professional chef nor assassin, so I am unable to verify the accuracy of that statement. But Chris Evans’ mixed metaphor in the first trailer for Netflix’s The Gray Man perfectly encapsulates what Joe and Anthony Russo hope to accomplish with their new international action-thriller. Ryan Gosling is a man on the run from a murderous adversary. In a film that resembles a cross between Jason Bourne and John Wick.  This film always had a lot to live up to, given its budget (one of Netflix’s largest ever), cast (absolutely loaded), and crew (the directors of the biggest films of all time). The first trailer for The Gray Man suggests that this will be the case. This advertisement is packed with action, style, and quips from Ryan Gosling. However, he will need more than a quick tongue to escape the film’s primary antagonist, Chris Evans’ mustache. Here is the film’s official plot summary:

The Gray Man is the CIA agent Court Gentry (Gosling), also known as Sierra Six. Gentry, recruited by his handler Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) after being rescued from a federal prison, was once a highly-skilled, Agency-approved merchant of death. Now, however, the tables have turned and Six is the one being hunted by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former CIA colleague who will stop at nothing to eliminate him. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll require it.  This classic Hollywood premise is sufficient to attract our attention. As is the phenomenal cast. But the addition of John Wick 3 takes this to the next level. Forget evading a single foe as a world-class “merchant of death.” Too simple! Turn the planet against him and observe how he survives.

Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay for The Gray Man, based on Mark Greaney’s novel of the same name. Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and Aldre Woodard also appear in the film. On July 15, The Gray Man arrives on Netflix and in select theaters. The show then premieres on Netflix on July 22. Which gives me just enough time to confirm that you make omelets with eggs. I’m fairly certain it’s action films that involve mass murder.
