Chris Evans Hunts Ryan Gosling in Netflix’s Most Expensive Movie, ‘The Gray Man’

Evans plays a sociopath assassin opposite Ryan Gosling’s CIA mercenary in Joe and Anthony Russo’s $200 million spy thriller. Ryan Gosling has not appeared in a film since “First Man” in 2018, but that is about to change dramatically. In Netflix’s massive blockbuster, “The Gray Man,” the actor returns to the big screen as a deadly CIA assassin. The new film from Joe and Anthony Russo, based on Mark Greaney’s best-selling book series, stars Chris Evans.  Gosling plays Sierra Six, a top CIA mercenary who conceals his identity due to the sensitivity of his missions. But when he discovers agency secrets that were meant to remain hidden, the tables are quickly turned, and he becomes the target of another of the government’s top assassins, Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans).

Gosling stated in a recent interview that his character’s ingenuity is matched only by his sense of humor.  “In nearly every scene, we attempted to place him at a disadvantage. And it becomes a matter of observing how he exploits whatever is available in his environment,” he said. “What he employs most frequently is a sense of humor. It is a tool for survival. If he can find humor in the absurdity of the situation, he will be able to distance himself from the danger.” In addition to Gosling and Evans, the ensemble cast consists of Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Wagner Moura, Jessica Henwick, and Alfred Woodard.

Netflix has had tremendous success in the television industry and has produced Oscar-nominated films that have received critical acclaim, but it has yet to produce a true blockbuster. This film, the company’s most expensive production to date at $200 million, is a clear attempt to change that. Netflix went all out to compete with studio blockbusters, recruiting several of Hollywood’s biggest stars and bringing in directors with a track record of box office success.  Netflix hopes that the film will launch a franchise that will be a long-term asset for the streaming service. According to the trailer, the plan is off to a good start.  “The Gray Man” will premiere in theaters on July 15, 2022, followed by a week of streaming on Netflix. You can view the trailer beneath:
