Bruce Springsteen’s Inaccurate Prediction That Led To A Hit Song

It can be difficult to create a song by composing the sound, writing the lyrics, and making the necessary arrangements. Many artists have been able to create works that have a special place in the hearts of their fans, but they have also discarded many others because they believed they would not be as popular. Almost every piece of music has a unique and fascinating origin story, some of which are shared by the composers in later conversations, while others remain hidden. In one of these tales, the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen were joined by another well-known punk rock musician. The creation and recording of the hit song ‘Because the Night’ were fascinating; let’s learn more about them.

The History of “Because the Night” by Bruce Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band began work on their fourth studio album, ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’, in the late 1970s, three years after the release of ‘Born to Run’ Springsteen had a title in mind during one of the album’s recording sessions and mumbled the rest of the lyrics for a while. The singer focused on writing lyrics for the song that would appear on the album, but he lacked inspiration. Four months later, his engineer Jimmy Iovine decided to complete this unfinished song, which had become a source of frustration for Springsteen and likely caused them to lose time. He was also Patti Smith’s producer around the same time, and he hoped he had an idea. As an industry veteran, Iovine devised a solution for both of his clients, which he then discussed with Springsteen.

Jimmy Iovine stated in an old interview that he needed a hit for Smith and asked Bruce Springsteen for permission to give her “Because the Night.” The singer agreed to give it to her, and Patti Smith composed the song’s lyrics. This song appeared on her third studio album, Easter, which was released on March 3, 1978. “Because the Night” was a commercial success and international hit that became a career-defining piece for Smith. Springsteen performed it alongside Smith on the Darkness Tour, which began in Buffalo on May 23, 1978, with his lyrics. The song that the singer was unable to complete and considered discarding became highly successful and well-known due to Smith’s artistic contribution. Despite being released decades ago, more than 25 million people have listened to the song on YouTube.

Here are Iovine’s exact words: “Bruce was very accommodating and understanding because he realized this was my first real opportunity as a producer. Anyway, one night while Bruce and I were lounging at the Hotel Navarro in New York, I told him that I desperately wanted a hit with Patti and that she deserved one. He accepted. As he had no current plans to include “Because the Night” on an album, I suggested that he give it to Patti. If she can do it, she can have it, replied Bruce.
