System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian recently appeared as a guest on Jonathan Montenegro’s My 3 Questions To series and responded to some frequently asked questions. One of the things he was asked about was whether System of a Down would reunite in the near future.
The band ended its hiatus in 2011 and started touring again. However, since then, they’ve only released two new songs, ‘Protect The Land‘ and ‘Genocidal Humanoidz‘ in 2020. They were about the conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan, with all the proceeds from the songs used to help Armenia.
So, it is not surprising that fans expect a new album from the band following these two new tracks. John Dolmayan had said in January that they had tried to come together to record a new album, but it was difficult due to their internal strifes. So, their personal disagreements got in the way, preventing them from finding common ground.
In a new interview, Odadjian was initially asked about the last music video he directed. He said it was their ‘Genocidal Humanoidz’ from three years ago. Then, he was asked whether there would be a new album from System of a Down. The bassist replied by saying that they were on a creative hiatus. So, they are not working on new material. Yet, they will play a show in Las Vegas on May 13.
When asked about the last time he directed a music video, Odadjian responded:
“The last time I did one was ‘Genocidal Humanoidz’ from System of a Down a couple of years back. That was cool and fun.”
His reply to whether they will work on a new record:
“Not in the near future, we are still on a musical hiatus, creative hiatus, but we’re playing at Sick New World in Las Vegas on May 13, and I got a solo record coming out very soon. So, that’s heavy, and it is big. It is not hip-hop; it is just crazy.”
As the bassist revealed, System of a Down has no plans to release new material, but there is other good news for the fans. Odadjian is currently working on his debut solo album, which will come out very soon. He aimed to go back to his roots in his upcoming record by focusing on some heavy stuff.
