Even though Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published over a decade ago, we have not moved on from the wizarding world. In fact, we millennials are likely as captivated as we were when the series was still airing. Too many of us have wands, chocolate frogs, and clothing bearing our Hogwarts house crest (we’re ALL Gryffindor, OK?). We can all admit to engaging in late-night HP theory discussions. Former cast members reunited in a television special to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone earlier this year. During this reunion, Emma Watson made a shocking revelation about her almost-departure from the franchise; her comments have only recently resurfaced.
“You were contemplating withdrawal. Rupert Grint told Emma during their adorable televised conversation as part of the special, “I’ve never really talked to you about that.” “I believe I was afraid,” Emma responded. “I don’t know if you’ve ever reached a tipping point where you thought, ‘This is basically forever now'” “We never really discussed it,” Daniel Radcliffe added. “I suppose we were simply proceeding at our own pace. We were somewhat present at the time. It simply did not occur to us that we were probably all experiencing similar emotions.”
“At times, I was lonely,” Emma admitted, explaining that “the fame thing had finally hit me hard.” She continued, “No one needed to persuade me to follow through. The fans sincerely wished for my success, and they have each other’s backs.” Tom Felton weighed in on Emma’s struggle, remarking, “People forget what she undertook and how gracefully she handled it.” He went on to explain that he had his “cronies” and Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint had each other, but that Emma Watson’s experience as the only girl was very different. “Not only was she younger, but she was also by herself,” he explained. Thankfully, Emma returned to her role as Hermione, the Hermione of our dreams.
