ROB HALFORD is not thrilled by JUDAS PRIEST’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame via the Musical Excellence Award

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a controversial topic. On the one hand, it is an important milestone that recognizes the contributions of musicians. On the other hand, there appears to be no rhyme or reason to who is nominated each year, and there is always contention over who makes the cut. Rob Halford, the Metal God, has mixed feelings about Judas Priest’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year, Judas Priest will receive the Musical Excellence Award as opposed to the Performers Award that Black Sabbath received. However, he still believes it is a positive development for metal.

According to Halford’s statement to the Arizona Republic, “On occasion, I conclude, “No, it doesn’t matter.” The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has inducted us. Be grateful. The phrase ‘Shut the hell up!’ Then there are times when I wonder, “Why did they give us the award for musical excellence?” The Musical Excellence Award is reserved for blah, blah, blah. And I responded, “Yeah, but I want to be with those musicians over there who have the performance or whatever it is they have.”” Halford continued, perplexed “Why did they not give us the same title as our friends? Black Sabbath is an illustration. There is a distinct label, isn’t there? I was furious. I was somewhat enraged. Does it matter at the end of the day? I realize it’s silly, but it’s just annoying. And on the other side, the response is, “Great.” Everyone else received that while we received this.’ Judas Priest continue to be the Rodney Dangerfield of metal. They receive no respect.”

“I have no idea why we received the Musical Excellence Award. I have no clue. I felt a little bit like, ‘Well, Sabbath took care of that. Why then can’t we have it?’ Not because I am envious of Sabbath. I’m only referring to the label they give it. Why do they put these damn tags on the item? Why do they not say, “Welcome. You’re a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ and stop there?” Probably because that would be too simple, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as we all know, never does anything simple. The induction ceremony for this year is scheduled for November 5 in Los Angeles, and will be streamable on HBO Max shortly thereafter. The Rock Hall defines the Award For Musical Excellence as being presented to “artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers whose originality and influence in creating music have had a profound impact on music.” Prior recipients of the award include LL Cool J, Nile Rodgers, Ringo Starr, and Billy Preston.
