Phil Collen Reveals Which Def Leppard Songs He Would Have Given To Lady Gaga Or Miley Cyrus

Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell recently participated in an interview with Guitar World in which they discussed their most recent album, tour, and influences. Collen also disclosed which track from the album he desired Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus to record. Today’s rock stars are collaborating with artists we wouldn’t expect, such as pop stars, demonstrating an innovative spirit. Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus are also among the names that garner the attention of numerous prominent rock and metal musicians. While many artists, including Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, James Hetfield, and Sting, have expressed admiration for Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus had the opportunity to perform with Steven Tyler and cover “Nothing Else Matters” for members of Metallica.

It appears that Phil Collen admires the two prominent pop singers and questions their performance on a Def Leppard song. In a recent interview, the guitarist discussed the first single from their most recent album, “Diamond Star Halos,” “Kick.” Collen explained that ‘Kick’ and ‘Fire It Up’ were not written specifically for Def Leppard to perform. Instead, he desired to compose rock anthems that everyone in the stadiums could sing together. The guitarist also disclosed that writing rock anthems is not as simple as it may appear. When he wrote the two songs, he told the lead singer of his band, Joe Elliott, that he wanted other singers to record them. When asked about the names that came to mind, Phil Collen stated that he could envision Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus performing the songs. He believes they are able to add various elements to the songs and perform them as required.

Phil Collen on “Kick” and “Fire It Up”: “This song, along with ‘Fire It Up,’ was not written for Def Leppard. ‘Fire It Up’ was one of the earliest songs I composed, while ‘Kick’ was the last. Dave Bassett is the co-author of the film “Kick.” I programmed a drum pattern because I wanted to compose a rock anthem suitable for stadium singing. Identical to ‘Fire It Up’. Astonishingly, although rock anthems appear simple, they are extremely difficult to compose. Anyway, I composed the songs and performed them for Joe. I told him I was going to give them to other artists to record, and he said, “That’s a Def Leppard song,” after each one. The other men felt identically.”

He then revealed the titles he chose for the two songs: “Everyone from Lady Gaga to Miley Cyrus had a different thing. These songs are difficult because, if not performed properly, they can sound corny. They are effective rock anthems. They are designed for stadium use.” You can hear both songs listed below.
