There is still more than a month till the premiere of the Trace Adkins and Susan Sarandon-led television drama Monarch. This week, though, the show published a brand-new original tune in preparation for the premiere of its first season. The song’s title is “American Cowgirl,” and it features the voice of Anna Friel, who portrays Nicolette “Nicky” Roman. The song was composed by the show’s executive music producer Adam Anders, Casey Brown, and Heather Morgan, and features Friel singing enthusiastically about the cowgirl lifestyle. The phrase “American cowgirl / I lasso your heart and seize the oars / I have a love as large as Texas coursing through my veins / I’m a girl who doesn’t back down / I mount my horse and stake my claim / Bringing the wild to the wild, wild west and living up to my name / Friel sings in the chorus, “I’m an American cowgirl with red lips, blue pants, and white pearls”
In a video clip posted by the show, Anders explains how the song came to be, stating that the lyrics evolved naturally with Brown and Morgan. The premiere of Monarch is scheduled for Sunday, September 11 on Fox. After its post-football premiere, the program will go to its regular time slot on Tuesday, September 20 at 9 p.m. Monarch was scheduled to debut in January of this year, but manufacturing was delayed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Albie Roman (played by Adkins) and his wife, Dottie Cantrell Roman, comprise the fictional “First Family of Country Music” on the show (Sarandon). As the couple’s daughters Nicolette and Gigi Taylor-Roman (Beth Ditto) seek to carry on their parents’ heritage, the show’s trailer hints at familial conflict.
