Stevie Nicks Desires To Be The ‘Tom Petty Girl’ Despite Her Notoriety

By 1976, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album, Stevie Nicks had already established himself as rock ‘n’ roll royalty. His first album with Fleetwood Mac was a success, despite the fact that he had not yet reached the level of fame he enjoyed during the Rumors period. Nicks fell in love with Petty’s music despite making his own way in the world. The band has achieved a moderate degree of success but struggles to maintain a stable lineup. They have finally reached their stride with the addition of two American artists

1975 saw the release of the band’s self-titled album. It was well received, but the band had to tour extensively to promote it.  Nicks told Uncut that there were no limousines and Christine McVie slept on the amplifier in the back of the truck. “We simply performed everywhere and sold records. We destroyed that album.” The album reached the top of the US charts more than a year after its release and produced three hit singles.  Stevie Nicks wants to be like Tom Petty. While Nicks and Fleetwood Mac were enjoying their success and composing their magnum opus, Rumors, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album. Nicks became one of their biggest fans very quickly.

“After I joined Fleetwood Mac, I began hearing Tom Petty on the radio,” Nicks says in Warren Zanes’ biography Petty: The Biography. “I fell in love with the band and the music.” If I had ever known Tom Petty and been able to gain his favor, if he had asked me to leave Fleetwood Mac and join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I probably would have done so. And that was prior to my meeting him.” Sadly for Nicks, the Heartbreakers are not currently seeking new members. Nicks told his manager when he began working on his debut solo album, “If I can’t be in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I want to make a record that sounds like TP.” To accomplish this, Petty contributed to the album. Despite the fact that he realized he did not want to be a producer, he recommended his friend Jimmy Iovine to Nicks.

“We discussed Tom Petty extensively,” Nicks said of his first meeting with Iovine. I stated, “You know, I really want to be a Tom Petty girl.” Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks collaborate musically.  Nicks was never a member of the Heartbreakers, but his debut solo album featured a collaboration with Tom Petty. “Insider” was originally intended to appear on Bella Donna, but Petty refused to give up. He gave her “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” instead.  Heartbreakers provided the backing track for the song, which was sung by the duo. Nicks and Petty will also sing together on his album Hard Promises’ track “Insider.”
