Update: Carlos Santana’s representatives have issued a statement in response to the musician’s hospitalization, attributing the incident to “heat exhaustion and dehydration.” The statement read: “Rock legend Caros Santana died of heat exhaustion and dehydration during a concert in Michigan on the evening of Tuesday, July 5.” The guitar legend was taken to the emergency room following his performance at the Pine Knob Music Theater. Tonight, Santana manager Michael Vironis reported that McLaren’s observation at Clarkston is going well. Unfortunately, Santana’s concert scheduled for July 6 in Burgetstown, Pennsylvania, has also been postponed, and no new date has been announced. However, Santana himself posted on Facebook about his condition. The original account is provided below.
On the evening of Tuesday, July 5, Carlos Santana reportedly collapsed onstage during a concert in Michigan. The news was first shared on Twitter by Roop Raj of Fox 2, who posted a photo of medical personnel attending to Santana at the Pine Knob Music Theatre. Santana reportedly passed out after performing his song “Joy,” prompting medical personnel to administer first aid for approximately twenty minutes while partially concealing him with a black wire. Afterwards, Santana was reportedly removed from the stage while waving to the audience. Later, the concert, which was part of his Miraculous Supernatural 2022 tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, was canceled, and attendees were asked to pray for him in light of a “serious medical emergency.” The venue staff reportedly informed the audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, as you can see, there is an urgent medical situation.” “Let us unite our prayers… We need it immediately… Please send this man your light and love.”
This is not the first incident to affect Santana’s health during a live performance; last December, he was forced to cancel eight dates of his residency at the House of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. According to a statement from his management at the time, the cancellation was made so that he could recover from a “unplanned heart procedure.” Santana, who was born in Autlán, Jalisco, Mexico on July 20, 1947, rose to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s with his band of the same name. Many regard him as one of the best guitarists of the modern era, both as a solo artist and as a collaborator on a variety of songs. Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, having won ten Grammys and three Latin Grammys.
“Gravity and time are illusions,” Santana previously told guitarworld. “I only exist in the present moment.” I am only the present moment. Therefore, I do not have Igor telling me, pardon the expression, utter nonsense that I do not have to accept. My light, my soul, and my heart say, “Go for it, the time is now!” Immerse yourself in the unknown and the unpredictable. I occasionally catch myself in the mirror when I turn around and see myself walking a little differently, and I exclaim, “Hey, hey, hey! Differently Come on, now! Don’t walk like a dreadful old camel!’ I yell at myself and then I exclaim, “Oh!” Then, for the next three days, I walk differently and with more posture. I command my energy to change its behavior. You can actually program yourself, your Light, your soul, your heart, your mind, and your ego to “stand up straight and fly in the right direction.”
