Herman Li defended Dave Mustaine in a recent video posted to DragonForce’s YouTube channel in response to his harsh words directed at a Judas Priest crew member. On July 2, Megadeth and Judas Priest performed at the Barcelona Rock Fest. Numerous notable artists and bands, including Alice Cooper and KISS, participated in this year’s festival. The festival had two adjacent main stages to eliminate downtime between performances. Megadeth’s performance was interrupted when the Judas Priest guitar technician began sound checking on the other stage. Before continuing with the next song, Mustaine insulted the guitar technician on stage due to the interruption.
Herman Li mentioned this incident in a recent video and stated that he understood Mustaine’s perspective. Festival performances are already difficult, and they become even more difficult when the crew does not perform the silent line check correctly. He added that Judas Priest would likely be ready to perform prior to any sound checks if they arrived late due to cancellations and delays. However, Megadeth was performing, and when they heard the other guitarist shredding the guitar, the performance was ruined. Eventually, Li stated that Mustaine could have maintained his composure and not caused a scene, but he added that all musicians react negatively to such irritating situations.
The words of Herman Li in support of Dave Mustaine: “I must in some way defend Dave Mustaine on this point. I’ve been to a lot of festivals, though not as many as he has, and it’s incredibly annoying to hear the other stage next door doing a line check while you’re performing. You should conduct a silent line check. You are not permitted to have an amp next door that can be heard while you play. It would become quite irritating. Your performance takes you out of the game, and you begin to make errors. Judas Priest is more prominent on the bill than Megadeth, as they perform afterward. They are most likely thinking, Well, we are the headlining act. Or perhaps they were late and unable to sound check earlier. Typically, the headliner soundchecks earlier in the day due to their status as the headlining act. They probably didn’t arrive on time due to flight cancellations and delays, especially in Europe during this touring season, and they said, “Well, we’re the headlining act, we have to go.”
He added: “In defense of Dave, that is extremely irritating! I realize you’re a headliner, but I’m currently performing! I require play! If I play poorly because some guy is playing loud guitar in the background, it’s not fair, and it’s not something you should do at that level. He probably should not have flipped off that guy in front of the fans and caused them to talk trash about him, but c’mon! When in the moment, as musicians, we react.” The video can be viewed below.
