Elton John recalls Michael Jackson’s departure from reality, comparing him to Elvis Presley

In his autobiography, Elton John revealed important details about his life and his thoughts on other artists, including his relationship with the late musician Michael Jackson. John compared Jackson to Elvis Presley and described how both of them created an alternate reality.  Elvis Presley became a musical icon whose style significantly influenced young people. The singer was crowned “King of Rock and Roll” due to his distinctive sound, daring fashion sense, and hit records such as “Elvis Presley,” “Elvis Is Back!,” “His Hand in Mine,” and “Something for Everyone.” His career was cut short by his untimely death on August 16, 1977.

A few years after the death of Elvis Presley, a child pop star from The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, began his solo career and revolutionized the music industry. The mainstream success and popularity came rapidly, largely due to his sixth studio album, ‘Thriller,’ which became one of the world’s most famous albums.  However, Yahoo! recalled recently that, according to Elton John, the two legendary musicians shared a similar fate not only in terms of fame and glory, but also in terms of their struggle with addiction. In his remarkable autobiography, ‘Me: Elton John,’ the singer emphasized that he had known Michael Jackson since he was a child and described him as affable. Then, things changed, and Jackson’s prescription drug addiction caused him to lose his sense of reality, just as Presley had.

John wrote the following in his book:  “I had known Michael since he was 13 or 14 years old.” He was the cutest child you could ever imagine. However, at some point in the intervening years, he began isolating himself from the world and reality, in the manner of Elvis Presley. God knows what was going on in his head and what prescription drugs he was being pumped full of, but whenever I saw him in his later years, I was left with the impression that he had lost his mind. This is not intended to be humorous. He was genuinely mentally ill and a disturbing presence.  Elton John added that Michael Jackson wasn’t just funny and crazy because of drugs; he was a mentally ill individual who was unable to distinguish between dream and reality. The legendary musician admitted that he was disturbed by the pop icon’s presence, which is not shocking given his controversial behavior.
